Paleo Day 4 - Queen of Steam
I love my steamer insert. Why did I never have one of these before? They’re amazing (and so simple!!) I steamed up 2 bunches of organic broccoli, added a little salt and butter, and ate the whole thing like it was a bowl of ice cream or something, it tasted so good.
I also made curried ground turkey (because Giant didn’t have any ground pork… grrr) with baby spinach, which is good, but I’m full from the broccoli and I can’t eat too much more. I’ve never had curry before, but I definitely like it. The heat doesn’t come until the end, and it’s got a lovely, almost nutty, taste. The recipe is straight from The Paleo Solution and uses coconut milk. I also picked up some Almond milk at Giant, but I haven’t tried it yet.
I’m so wary of a lot of the “organic” meats at Giant though. They all say “fed a strictly Vegetarian diet,” but that doesn’t necessarily mean grass-fed, does it? I mean, technically grains are vegetarian… must research further.
So I met with the Paleo nutritionist at Thrive Lancaster today after work. It was really nice getting to talk to someone about switching to Paleo. She pretty much confirmed I was going about it the right way - going cold turkey and strict for the first 30 days, keeping a log/blog about my food intake without micro-managing and over-analyzing everything that I eat and writing more about my feelings about switching. She also assured me that there will always be someone More Paleo Than Thou and to try my best to do the best I can (without driving myself insane). I told her that I didn’t like saying I was “on the Paleo diet” because that makes it sound like I’ve jumped onto yet another dieting bandwagon. She told me she tells people that she “eats Paleo,” which I think is definitely a better way to go about it.
It’s pretty expensive to sign up for one-on-one sessions with her, so I’m going to have to give it some more thought before I decide to do that. But Thrive also has a couple free seminars on Paleo nutrition that I’ll definitely be going to. They’re also affiliated with a CrossFit gym in Lancaster, and I think it’s more likely that I’ll end up joining the gym a few months down the road. Once I get my diet under control, lose a little weight and get some energy back, it’d be nice to be around like-minded Paleo people.
My biggest worry at this point is overcompensating for the urge to eat too much meat by eating too many veggies. Just something that I’ll figure out once I get more used to this diet way of life.
